About
Three master improvisers – Robert Dick, Stephen Nachmanovitch and Robert Jospé-- will play on May 6, 2017 at 8 pm in The University of Virginia’s Brooks Hall. Sponsored by The Charlottesville Jazz Society and WTJU. This trio concert will be a spontaneous musical conversation and exploration of sound, rhythm, melody and more. Dick will be playing flute, bass flute and other instruments; Nachmanovitch will be playing violin, viola, electric violin, viola d’amore and voice; Jospé will be playing drum set, hand drums, log drums, and other percussion.
New York based Robert Dick has completely dispensed with preconceptions about what music a flutist plays and what the flute can sound like. Listening to Robert play solo has been likened to hearing a full orchestra. He plays the flute as a human powered synthesizer; his sound can be thick chords one instant, then chromatic percussion, then delicate whispering filigrees, then a display of surprising power. The New York Times calls him “ a flutist whose technical resources and imagination seem limitless.” He received the National Flute Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2014. His newest CD is “Our Cells Know”(Tzadik), which was given 5 Stars in Downbeat Magazine....
